Why Once Spoken exists

Most memorials are made for the people who already remember us.

Once Spoken is a little different.

I created it because I wanted the people we’ve lost to continue finding their way into the minds of people they never had the chance to meet.

Traditional memorial pages can be beautiful, but over time they become places people have to deliberately seek out. Unless you know the person’s name, know their story, and know where to look, you may never find them.

Here, you don’t have to be looking.

You might arrive to remember someone you love and, along the way, stumble across a face you’ve never seen before. You’ll learn their name, see their photograph and read a few words they once actually spoke.

For a moment, you’ll know a tiny piece of them.

And perhaps years from now, when those who knew them personally are no longer here to tell their stories, someone else will still come across that photograph and those words.

I think there’s something just a little magical about that.

Once Spoken exists to give the people we’ve lost another way of being remembered — not only by those who knew them, but by those who didn’t.

The person behind Once Spoken

My name is Rob, and Once Spoken is a small independent project with a very personal beginning.

I lost my wife, Rhonda, when I was 32.

One of the strange things about losing someone relatively young is knowing how much life continues without them. New people enter our lives who never had the chance to meet them. Children grow older. Memories become stories, and eventually even the people carrying those memories won’t be here forever.

I didn’t want Rhonda simply to become a name belonging to the past.

That thought eventually became Once Spoken.

It’s why the words here matter so much to me. These aren’t biographies written about someone after they’ve gone. They’re little pieces of the person themselves — something funny, profound, ordinary, ridiculous or unmistakably them that they actually said.

Once Spoken grew from my own experience of loss, but it isn’t about Rhonda or me.

It’s a place for all of them.

How it works

A memorial here is deliberately small. A photograph, a name, the years of a life, and a short piece of something the person actually said — not something written about them afterwards.

Every memorial is read by a person before it appears. Nothing is published automatically, and nothing goes live until it has been approved.

Once it is approved, it joins everybody else. Memorials appear one at a time, and the one you see is chosen at random. There is no search box, no directory and no need to know whose name you are looking for. You simply meet whoever the site brings you.

That is the whole idea. Being found by people who were not looking for you is not a side effect of Once Spoken — it is the point of it.

Stay with someone for a while, light a candle for them, or move on to the next. Nobody is ever more prominent than anybody else. There are no profiles to build, no biographies to write, no followers and no rankings.

One photograph. One name. One thing they said. The same for everyone.

We do not sell your personal information.

you believe a photograph, quote or other content has been used without the right permission;
